Signed Sirelle: AUGUST 2012

You’re competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. You know..they’re not hanging out. They’re not getting over. They’re not playing video games. They’re not watching ‘Real Housewives’. I’m just saying, it’s a two-way street. You gotta earn success.”

President Barack Obama made those remarks recently at the 2012 National Urban League Convention, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The president’s objective was to inspire the American youth to strive for excellence within society.

As I have observed coverage of the Olympics over the past few days, I found the president’s remarks to come full circle. We have an abundance of youthful talent representing our nation. Through their stories, various lessons can be taught: work ethic, perseverance, sacrifice, and dedication to pinpoint a few.

Missy Franklin (swimming), Anthony Davis (basketball), and Jordyn Wieber (gymnastics) are three excellent role models for young Americans. The purpose here is not for every young American to now strive towards being an Olympian, but to take a value from our young Olympians stories and apply them to their lives. -SC.

Viewer Alert: USA Basketball

If you are anything like myself, then even the most miniscule Olympic-related activities sends your fanatic adrenaline into overload; especially when it comes to basketball.

Team USA tips off their 2012 gold medal campaign tonight in Las Vegas in an exhibition game against the Dominican Republic. Reigning regular season and NBA Finals MVP, LeBron James, along with Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul are a few of the superstars returning from the 2008 gold medal team that highlight this year’s team.

There was much excitement surrounding Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin in this year’s Olympic tournament; however, Griffin suffered a knee injury in a recent scrimmage. Griffin has since returned to Los Angeles and there is no word yet regarding whether or not he will return to the Olympic squad. New Orleans Hornets rookie, Anthony Davis, has been selected to replace Griffin.

The exhibition game tips off at 9PM ET tonight on on ESPN.

GQ Recap: July 2012

Eyes down here!

From the second the July cover landed in my Gmail inbox, I knew this issue was going to be some kind of spectacular. Even with the videos and swimsuits, I hadn’t previously been swooned by Miss Kate Upton; but she absolutely mesmerizes as this month’s cover girl.

Though believe it or not, this issue isn’t entirely perked on boobs. And even in light of celebrating our country’s independence, it’s also not technically All-American; Australian heartthrob, Chris Hemsworth (yes, Miley’s brother-in-law to be), models the most vital American wardrobe necessity — t-shirts — simultaneously making this issue something ladies can drool over too!

To celebrate America’s birthday, the issue presents 50 Things America Does Better Than Anyone Anywhere Else; and the GQ staff covers everything. From “The Greatest Team In The History of Sports” (the 1992 Olympic Dream Team led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird) to the Six Degrees of Kim Kardashian’s Ass which you must read.

In what is a near flawless issue, the GQ Endorses Manual also highlight’s rapper A$AP Rocky‘s rebel style.

The issue is currently available in stores.

Sound Session: LOTUS

Up and coming rapper, Mahd, brings his talents to the mic with his latest track, Lotus; a cover of Hov & Ye’s, Otis. Over much of the last year, the Detroit native has generated quite a buzz on the hip-hop circuit.

His first single, Pretty Ladies — currently available on iTunes — has already swept the airwaves in select markets. However, it’s under-the-radar tracks such as Competition?, which samples Erykah Badu’s Didn’t Cha Know, that display Mahd, the artist.

Here’s the link to the Lotus video.

Vogue Recap: July 2012

Laced in Nina Ricci, Hollywood starlet Emma Stone graces the cover of the July issue; and inside, her feature editorial, Comic Relief, is a must-read. The actress co-stars in the blockbuster, The Amazing Spider-Man, set to hit theaters July 3rd.

America’s current-favorite blonde bombshell, Kate Upton, is also featured in the issue. Bringing Sexy Back is an editorial that documents the swimsuit model’s quest to exhibit she is more than just, well — a swimsuit model.

In reverting back to the Olympic theme of the previous issue comes Going The Distance; a highlight of Marlen Esparza, a female boxer who will represent the United States as women’s boxing makes its Olympic debut.

The July issue also features Olivia Wilde, Ethel Kennedy, and highlights of this year’s Met Gala.

Signed Sirelle: JULY 2012

I was recently flipping back through the April 2012 issue of GQ, when I came across an editorial — authored by Claire Hoffman — featuring Drake, and a statement made by the rap superstar took my thoughts on an infinite wander.

The rapper declares:

The seconds after a man reaches climax, that’s like the realest moment of your life. If I don’t want you next to me in that fifteen, twenty seconds, then there’s something wrong.”

With each passing day, as I get older, I seem to acquire this elderly nerve where I wonder where has love gone. Do we even know what that is anymore? I often wonder has the majestic element of love that once existed for the Good Warriors (those born between 1909-1928) gone extinct. So when I stumbled across the statement from Drake (which by the way is not limited to just men), it multiplied my inquiries.

It seems this generation is only concerned with living in the now; neglecting the future. The trend is searching for Ms. Saturday night, instead of Mr. 30 years from now. As a result, what follows is that one ends up marrying Ms. Saturday night on a Thursday, only to get divorced on a Tuesday, all because you weren’t committing for the right reasons to begin with.

We have to stop living our lives as if it’s the climax. -SC.

Sound Session: Believe

Biebs released his third studio album, Believe, today, and  — after turning 18 just three months ago — it’s clear that this is a new, mature Justin Bieber.

On this project, Bieber takes the next leap in his vocal journey; transitioning from a global teenybopper, to an authentic artist.

With production from the likes of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins, Mike Posner, and Hit-Boy, Believe blends pop with a R&B-like melodic zest.

Though the smash hit “Boyfriend” was the album’s first single, it’s tunes such as “As Long As You Love Me” featuring Big Sean, and “Right Here” featuring Drake that really exhibit the maturation metamorphosis of Justin Bieber, the musician.

The album also has features from Nicki Minaj and Ludacris.

Viewer Alert: 2012 NBA Finals

This is history. (No wait, don’t stop reading!) I know it sounds cliché, overdone, and stale but it’s that simple. As a basketball fan — whether your team advanced or not — you have to crave a championship clash of this enormity.

To most, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat were the two best teams in the NBA this season. And as I relayed to my Twitter followers shortly ago, there’s no in-between with this matchup. Your gut has to latch onto one side. It’s Coke, or Pepsi. Dunkin’ or Starbucks. You have to choose a side.

I say, Thunder win in 7. (For the non-fan, this means they will win 4 times, of the 7 allotted games.)

The series tips off tonight on ABC, at 9PM ET; with the Thunder hosting the Heat in Oklahoma City for Games 1 and 2.

Press Play: Summer 2012

In spring 2011 I began an editorial series entitled Press Play. Almost immediately, a tide of positive feedback rippled in. Many were requests that I make the series seasonal, monthly even. And seeing as though my suggested playlists were multi-themed — could be used for proms, bonfires, beach days, etc. — I reckoned that perhaps it would be judicious to oblige.

As a result, where there is demand, I shall supply.

The cohesion between the summer season and music is mythical. They mesh, they gel. So much so that I, for one, believe almost that you can’t have one without the other. It’s why some of the biggest concerts and music festivals (see: Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza) are held in the summer — it just works.

Glad You CameThe Wanted: The argument can be made that this record was in rotation for quite some time before the heat waves hit. Though as this track spun across college campuses nationwide — nearly in complete unison — one could strongly declare it the unofficial prelude to summer.

What A Wonderful World” Sam Cooke: We all love our oldies. This vintage record is the ideal classic to listen to during a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway with the love of your life.

Drunk On You” Luke Bryan: No music genre relates to the summer time quite like country. Beer, women, pickup trucks, and… beer, women, and pickup trucks. Well, I guess love calculates into the equation in some form. But regardless, Drunk On You is tailor-made for the small town John eyeing the All-American Jane at every summer social before he ever even thinks of asking her out. With a couple pumps of the keg — and spins of this track — they’ll both be intoxicated on each other before August.

As Long As You Love MeJustin Bieber featuring Big Sean: So.. at some point, I blinked; and in that instance of life, Biebs (if I may call him that) went from telling his girl ‘One Time‘, to seemingly enhancing his vocabulary with “swag, swag” whispers. In turn, Biebs — in some sort of delayed puberty transition — attempts to integrate himself into the world of trance music with this latest single. The record has somewhat of a Dubstep meets Kidz Bop feel to it, though — nevertheless — mothers, daughters, and radio stations galore will force feed us this record until 2015, so it’s best to just get on board with it now.

Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” John Legend featuring Ludacris: For the mature audience, Mr. Legend gives us this soulful, yet snazzy tune. On a warm summer’s night, when you’ve been separated from your “other” all day, it’s the perfect track to play once you’ve been reunited; then throw her on the bed. (Disclaimer: Gentlemen, do not fling your lady onto the bed, but rather sensually.. toss her. I’m here to help you, not be liable for your medical expenses because you’ve thrown your girlfriend through the wall.)

Work Hard, Play HardWiz Khalifa: This, is a summer record. Khalifa uplifts, motivates, and exemplifies with this track paying homage to his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There are songs, and then there are anthems. And yet again, Mr. Khalifa has dropped an anthem on us that will transcend far beyond the triple-degree season.

The Buzz: The Diamond Queen

This year marks HM Queen Elizabeth II‘s 60th year on the throne, as the Queen of England. In 1952 — at the age of 25 — she became queen after the death of her father, King George VI, and has served her country regally everyday since.

In this modernized era, the reigning monarch no longer sovereignly rules the Commonwealth, thus creating controversy over the last few decades as to why the monarchy remains in existence — strangely, mostly foreign controversy.

I have never quite been able to wrap my comprehension as to why countries who are not under the rule of the monarchy take issue with it. Particularly here in America. (However, CNN recently reported that the Queen’s popularity here in the states is currentlysky high‘.)

Granted there are those who argue that there are British citizens who want to ‘do away’ with the monarchy, though I can assure you they come few and far in-between; and no evidence proved that more than the past few days as England celebrated The Diamond Jubilee, which observes a monarch’s 60 years of reign.

This was only the second Diamond Jubilee in England’s history — Queen Victoria‘s (1819-1901) being the first — and the passion, pride, and spirit exuded by the British people surprised even members of the Royal Family.

The overwhelming support displayed by the British people during the jubilee celebration was a declarative testament of their love for their queen, and their monarchy.

There is no doubt in the minds of British that the Queen has certainly delivered on the promise she made to them six decades ago; vowing to serve them vigorously until the day she died.

More impressive is how she has managed to pull double duty for the last six decades, in both serving her country and being the matriarch of her family. She credits a great deal of her success to her husband of 64 years, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. In an address to Parliament earlier this year, she described The Duke as being “a constant strength and guide.”

Unfortunately, one cannot live forever — a rule that makes an exception for no one, not even Her Majesty. As a result of such reality, attention has turned to the future of the monarchy. The 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton created a jubilant state of euphoria in Europe, and all of the world; as William is the future King of England.

However, what many seem to subconsciously forget is that when the Queen does die, it is her eldest son, Prince Charles, who is next in line for the throne. Though with the queen’s mother living to be 101 — before her death in 2002 — and the Queen herself seeming to be in great health [at age 86], the question has began to circulate — what happens if Prince Charles dies before Queen Elizabeth?

In that event, Prince William would then become the heir apparent; as the primary line of succession goes through Prince Charles and his descendants.

In stepping away from hypotheticals, one thing for certain is that 2012 is indeed the Year of the Brit. All eyes are on England, as in addition to the Diamond Jubilee, London serves as host of the Summer Olympics this coming July; and are scheduled to be opened by none other than Her Majesty, the Queen.

Hip hip…”
