GQ Recap: April 2012

In launching their spring campaign, the staff at Gentlemen’s Quarterly rolled out a special issue, in what was donned their ‘First Ever Style Bible‘.

The issue features three separate covers: hip-hop superstar Drake, Mad Men‘s star John Slattery, and actor Dave Franco (yes, James’ little brotherhe’s trying to shake that description though.)

Reader favorites such as The Punch List creates its’ usual buzz and introduces two bombshells. Allison Williams of HBO’s Girls and societal it girl Azealia Banks; both of whom many may recognize from their individual YouTube…achievements.

The claim to fame for this issue is The GQ 100; a list that serves as a cultural guide to all things a man may wants and/or need — as told (see: dictated) by GQ.

The issue has been in circulation for nearly a month.

Film: Act of Valor

A few nights ago I caught a late-night showing of the recently released film, Act of Valor. Based on real acts of valor [says the opening credits] the film gave a deeper, Hollywood twisted glance into our nation’s armed forces. Their lives, tactics, strength, intellect, and emotions were all captured in the film.

Act of Valor is an action film perhaps unlike any other, as it frequently triggers your emotions. Seeing our soldiers sacrifice and leave their families—all in the name of protecting our country and those of us in it—and forming lifelong, sacred brotherhoods while at it, makes you feel some sort of way.

It makes you grateful. As Americans, we don’t do nearly enough to show our gratitude to those who risk everything to secure our safety. Therefore, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend [and even if you’re not], go see this film. It is the least we could all do, as it was filmed using real United States Navy SEALs.

Viewer Alert: Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks

Prepare for social media overload this evening as forums, blogs, and tweets ignite the hype of this premature rivalry.

Heat superstars Dwyane Wade and NBA MVP-front runner, LeBron James, host the visiting Knicks led by Carmelo Anthony and sophomore sensation Jeremy Lin.

With both ball clubs potentially poised to make strong second half surges—after the upcoming All-Star break—it is possible that tonight’s matchup is a prelude to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The game will be broadcasted on TNT starting at 7PM EST.

VOGUE Recap: March 2012

Dress Positively. It was the underlying message of Anna Wintour’s monthly editorial address in which she pleads with the reader to ‘keep that in mind’ when out shopping this spring.

Global superstar Adele covers the March issue—that also moonlights as Vogue‘s annual Power Issue—and after raking in six Grammys just over a week ago, one would be disturbed to argue against her selection.

In a ten-page spread authored by Jonathan Van Meter, the singer bares all—figuratively of course—and seduces readers into extending their imaginative love affairs with her.

Keeping relative to the music theme, tabbed as the issue’s It Girl is musician Esperanza Spalding. Spalding won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2011.

The issue also features the leading women of the revolutionary social media company, Twitter, and chronicles their [and the company’s] relocation to its’ new East Coast headquarters.

The 600+ page issue is already in circulation.

GQ Recap: March 2012

He simply does it again. GQ Editor-In-Chief, Jim Nelson, ignites the issue by stitching together one of his most compelling, thought-provoking Letter from the Editor‘s to date.

Nelson, second from left, pictured with Kanye West, Kid Cudi, and GQ Creative Director Jim Moore.

In his signature philosophical, yet satirical way — that only Nelson knows how to exhibit — he touches on the ongoing comedy extravaganza touring our nation, otherwise disguised as the GOP Presidential race. Though I cannot dictate, I strongly urge you to go grab a copy of the March issue and read Nelson’s address in its’ entirety.

The issue features Wanderlust co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd on the cover, and chronicles their multi-decade friend[not relation]ship over an eight page spread inside.

And in its’ monthly GQ Endorses: Manual, the staff focuses on retro-inspired ties, declares Louisville, Kentucky the “Manliest Town In America”, and tabs Italian fashion designer, Margherita Missoni, as the monthly Crush.

The Punch List does not disappoint as it includes: John Cusack, B.o.B, Katherine McPhee, and Liev Schreiber to name a few.

Feature spreads on Tim Tebow, Trey Songz, and the Ten Best New Restaurants in America round out the issue that is already available on newsstands.

Case of the Mondays 2.20.12

Happy President’s Day!

Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the exisiting government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.” – President Abraham Lincoln

Heat Check: Jeremy Lin & the New York Knicks

Start spreading the news…

In what seemed like a blast from the 1970s past, Madison Square Garden was rocking Sunday afternoon as the New York Knicks defeated the defending World Champion Dallas Mavericks, 104-97. The win was the eighth in the last ten games for the New York ball club.

Coming off a Friday night loss to the New Orleans Hornets, the Knicks showed tremendous resolve in an all-around team win Sunday. Six players scored in double figures, with J.R. Smith (who was just signed Friday as a free agent) and Steve Novak combining for 29 off the bench — though it was the young man everyone came to see who put on a dazzling performance.

In just his eighth career start, Jeremy Lin had arguably his greatest performance in the victory. From the initial tip-off, Dallas exhibited that they would not be single-handedly beaten by Lin and elected to trap the young point guard early. But it would be Lin’s veteran-like awareness in adjusting to the trap, and stretching it further to mid-court that would illustrate the spunk of the young sensation.

It would be that same spunk and savviness he used to steal the ball — with seconds remaining in the 3rd — and dunk it in to bring the trailing Knicks within three points, and The Garden to its feet. That same spunk exhibited when he dropped a long three-pointer in over Dirk Nowitzki (who had a game-high 34 points) with [just under] seven minutes remaining, only this time extending the Knicks lead to nine.

In what eventually resulted in a win, Lin would continue his own individual dominance, scoring a team-high 28 points while dishing out a career-high 14 assists. Through just eight starts Lin has scored 200 points and handed out 76 assists, while also leading the Knicks to seven victories and just one loss.

Perhaps what has been most impressive about the Knicks hot streak though is that they have been successful primarily without all-star forward Carmelo Anthony, who is sidelined with a groin injury. After missing several games, Anthony is expected back tonight against the New Jersey Nets. Although his return has prompted many to question how he will mesh with this new look ball club.

One thing that is for certain — however— is that if this Knicks team can function as a cohesive unit, they will be poised to make a devastating playoff run and put a damper on the Miami Heat‘s quest for a championship.

Heat Check: Detroit Red Wings

In most sports, the season-by-season philosophy for success entails staying healthy, and defending your home turf. No team in sports has done that this season quite like the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Winning their 21st consecutive home game at The Joe last Tuesday, the Wings broke the record for most consecutive home victories by defeating the Dallas Stars. The record had been held by the 1929 Boston Bruins club.

Boasting the NHL’s best overall record (40-17-2) and leading the league in points (82), the Wings have maintained a consistent rhythm of success throughout the entire season. Detroit is currently on a five-game winning streak, and have won seven of their last ten games. The club has achieved success this season as a result of superb coaching by Mike Babcock and staff, exceptional goaltending by Joey MacDonald, and all around cohesive teamwork — with leaders such as Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk raising their level of play.

Ineligible for further debate, the Red Wings are currently the hottest team in professional sports. They go for their 23rd consecutive home victory this afternoon, hosting the rival San Jose Sharks.

Film: Safe House

I can best sum up Safe House as a twisted remake of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, except the babysitter doesn’t, well — nevermind.

When standard protocol goes awry, low-level CIA agent Matt Weston (portrayed by Ryan Reynolds) finds himself with the sole task of keeping Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) out of harms way. Frost is a vilified former agent being hounded by steel-toting mercenaries.

With his majesty, Denzel, drawing the majority of the crowds to the theatre, it is Reynolds who steals the show. Every twist, every turn leads to a new leap and bound for Reynolds’ character, who wants nothing more than to prove himself to the agency. It is the coming of age performance for Reynolds that many moviegoers have longed for. His character fights a physical, emotional, and psychological battle with the concept of Good vs. Evil.

Reynolds undoubtedly holds his own alongside of the Hollywood heavyweight Washington. Though not to be out-shined Washington captivates the audience as he authentically immerses himself into the role of Tobin Frost. Both actors blend as exceptional compliments to one another, equating into a superb film.

Safe House was filmed in South Africa.
