En Vogue: The NBA’s Runway

Carlos Campos Carmelo Anthony

With the NBA Playoffs in full swing, we the fans are privy to all-access coverage, extending far beyond the games. Having said that, perhaps the most striking images are the off-court slam dunks and turnovers of today’s NBA style icons.

Coco Chanel once proclaimed that, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” A declaration that certainly summarizes the panache state of the National Basketball Association. Be that as it may, it seems to be widely unremembered how the league arrived to its present trendy era.

It was prior to the 2005-06 season that Commissioner David Stern implemented a mandatory dress code. Stern’s regulations governed that “all players must dress in business or conservative attire while arriving and departing a game, on the bench while injured, and when conducting official NBA business.” Almost immediately, the verdict was met with much indignation. Fast-forwarding to today, the pageantry of oversized jeans and fitted caps, marinated by complementary do-rags are long gone.

_______________________________________

Initially loathed by the players of the past, superstars of the present have so strongly embraced the dress code, that many people seem to have forgotten it exists. Magazine spreads, tailored Italian suits and front row seats at Fashion Week are a sign of the times; as these elements now set the style standard of the NBA.

As they do with most things, the players have made style a league-wide competition. While several players are battling for the lead, it would be hard to argue that reigning MVP, LeBron James, isn’t winning the couture arms race he arguably ignited.

LeBron James and Gisele Bündchen April 2008 US Vogue cover

In the spring of 2008, James appeared alongside Gisele Bündchen on the cover of American Vogue. It was then that the world grew conscious of James’ luxury flair. Since then, the hardwood phenom has also twice appeared on the cover of GQ. But while his style is globally saluted, James stated in a March 2012 interview with British GQ that he doesn’t have a preferred one. He declared, “I’m pretty flexible. It’s all about confidence, man!”

________________________________________

The mode doesn’t stop with the league’s most valuable player. Various other top NBA stars have equally made a name for themselves in the fashion world. Since joining the New York Knicks in 2010, Amar’e Stoudemire has collaborated on a clothing line with designer Rachel Roy, and become a regular at both New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and the Met Gala. But Stoudemire’s most notable coup may have been cozying up to American Vogue Editor-In-Chief, Anna Wintour. As a result, he was the subject of a feature editorial in the publication’s April 2012 issue.

Amare and Alexis Stoudemire Met Gala 2013

James and Stoudemire aren’t the only ballers with Miss Wintour on speed dial, however. James’ Miami Heat teammate, Dwyane Wade, has also established a relationship with the fashion maven. Wade appeared in the magazine twice last year, while also holding a joint signing with the editor during last fall’s Fashion’s Night Out.

There is a common denominator between the aforementioned players. They all play in “big market” cities, such as Miami and New York. But what if you play for a franchise in a smaller market.. are you lobbed out of the limelight? Not if you’re Russell Westbrook! As point guard of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook’s style of play on the court reflects his style off of it: showy and electric.

Prior to his injury — that has sidelined him for the remainder of the playoffs — Westbrook generated buzz with his post-game press conference attire. Red-framed glasses and flamboyant patterned, print shirts have become a trademark for the 24-year old.

Although Westbrook is limited to hidebound Oklahoma several months a year, he manages to stay fashionably relevant. He took in a plethora of the Spring 2013 shows in New York City last summer; most notably Billy Reid, and Richard Chai. And when GQ came calling to have him model — print shirts — for their January 2013 issue, the 6-foot-3 guard dished them the assist.

Reflecting, it seems that Commissioner Stern knew what he was doing when he implemented a dress code. Not to say that Stern took international fashion magazine spreads into account, necessarily, but the objective was to dress up the league. And whether it be LeBron James linking with Audemars Piguet, or Kobe Bryant being named ambassador for Hublot, one would find it difficult to suggest that the players aren’t benefiting from a more polished NBA.

Sound Session: Music from The Great Gatsby

Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film The Great Gatsby

At the request of Mr. Gatsby we are going to play for you…” Music from Baz Luhrmann’s Film The Great Gatsby. Many are preordaining the film as “Movie of the Year,” as it prepares to hit theaters this weekend.

Executive produced by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, the project can be most effectively cataloged as a modernized masterpiece.

SCO shares some of the compilation’s best tracks.

Lana Del Rey

The film’s lead single is entitled “Young and Beautiful,” performed by the bewitching Lana Del Rey. The record parallels the film, as it is both mysteriously dark and elegantly illuminated.

British vocalist Emeli Sandé entrancingly covers Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love.” This version embodies the “Gatsby” effect, adding a jazz element completely personifying that of the Roaring Twenties — the era in which the story is set in. We here at SCO have swooned over Sandé for months, and she delivers a sensational performance on this record.

Music monarch Beyoncé collaborates with André 3000, as the pair deliver a powerful rendition of the late Amy Winehouse’ hit single, “Back to Black.” Impenetrable in its tone, the record epitomizes the dark side of Jay Gatsby.

Originally released in 2011 as part of a separate project, Jack White‘s cover of the U2 hit, “Love Is Blindness,” is another of the soundtrack’s best records. White’s rendering of the song represents Jay Gatsby’s perverted obsession with Daisy Buchanan. The song was featured in various trailers of the film.

Jack White and Jay-Z 2013 Grammys

Last, though never the least, is the executive producer’s own single, “100$ Bill.” In an artistic contortion, Jay-Z integrates the lavish urban lifestyle with that of Jay Gatsby’s, as only the best rapper alive can. Leonardo Dicaprio is featured on the record, in the form of Jay Gatsby — via several snippets from the film.

The soundtrack, as a whole, illustrates the film’s dark and alluring theme, and was released today.

The Buzz: Met Gala 2013 Best Dressed

Every twelve months — typically the first Monday of May — the Met Gala assumes global spotlight, as it is the most alluring night of the year. Where the world’s of fashion and Hollywood collide, this event marks the commencement of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibit, in New York City. The pinnacle of all its kind, the Met Gala intrinsically serves as prom for society’s A+ listers.

Punk: Chaos to Couture

The annual exhibit endows a theme, all in all, celebrating the history of fashion. Opening to the general public May 9, this year’s theme is PUNK: Chaos to Couture. The exhibit highlights the influence of punk culture on the fashion industry.

Last night, some of the world’s biggest stars convened on the red carpet; and in keeping with the theme, they donned breathtaking ensembles that arguably merited exhibits of their own.

SCO performed the daunting task of selecting a few of the evening’s best dressed.

Met Ball 2013 Best Dressed

Actresses Rooney Mara and Anne Hathaway immaculately captivated the red carpet. On opposite ends of the color spectrum, Mara — who also served as co-chair of the event — sauntered the carpet in a white Givenchy gown; while Hathaway mesmerized the paparazzi, in vintage Valentino. Hathaway also stole the show with her freshly dyed, blonde hairdo.

Minka Kelly was another favorite, as she dazzled in a laced Carolina Herrera gown. Most recently, Kelly has been the subject of countless rumor mills as a favorite to play the role of Anastasia, in the 50 Shades of Grey film.

Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev was the final selection. In Monique Lhuiller, Dobrev fused both gown and pantsuit in a spellbinding black ensemble. The actress also appeared in the 2012 film The Perks of Being A Wallflower.

The women were not the only ones on the red carpet, however. There were a few A-list men that commanded onlookers as well. While they could not exactly make the same “punk” statements as the women, the men still managed to assemble ritzy getups.

Met Gala 2013 Best Dressed Men

Actor Jason Sudekis wore a dapper three-piece tuxedo suit, as he strolled the red carpet with actress Olivia Wilde. And footballers Victor Cruz and Tom Brady rocked sharp, contrasting blue blazers.

Hip-hop superstar Kanye West stepped out in a simple, yet commanding black tuxedo. West was slated to be one of several performers on the night.

Sound Session: The 20/20 Experience

For quite some time it had been rumored that Justin Timberlake would release a second album this year. Earlier today, the musician eliminated all the grapevine chatter by confirming — via social media — that the second installment of The 20/20 Experience would indeed be releasing September 30.

The 20/20 Experience album cover

It has been nearly two months since Timberlake released the first installment of The 20/20 Experience, the third solo album of his career. And if what the musician refers to as Part 2 of 2 is at all similar to Part 1, then we are truly in store for a masterful project.

Featuring ten tracks, The 20/20 Experience is a compilation of ageless, melodic tunes so astutely crafted that we, as fans, are wholeheartedly forced to forgive Timberlake’s musical hiatus, and recognize that this project was worth the wait. As a result, for this month’s Sound Session, I have selected five of my personal favorite tracks from the album.

——————————————————————

Critics of this generation’s pop music often argue that decades from now we will not be able to deem any of the music from this era as classical. However, Spaceship Coupe is a clear-cut contradiction, and a spirited flip of the middle finger to such an assertion. Timberlake channels a futuristic Smokey Robinson in this soulfully stirring tune, which can certainly resurface thirty years from now.

The album features several jaunty tracks. Nonetheless, Blue Ocean Floor serves to be somewhat of the album’s pelagic lullaby. This is the most soothing record on The 20/20 Experience.

Tunnel Vision is the most diverse track on the album. This song bridges the gap Timberlake may have still shared with a [more urbanized] male fan base. Embodying the quintessential production of Timbaland, the record can definitely be classified as a banger!

Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z

Despite the fact that Suit & Tie, featuring Jay-Z, was the album’s first released single — and much ado was made about it — Mirrors is the signature track of The 20/20 Experience. Timberlake vocally hits a grand slam, and unconditionally embeds himself within the record. Dynamically composed, Mirrors is both euphonious and hypnotizing. The record possesses the ability to completely overcome you to the point that, before you know it, you’re vigorously belting out every word — in the library, during finals week.

The most underappreciated record of the album — and perhaps because it is only available on the deluxe edition, though all the more reason to purchase it — is Dress On. This is the sexy, feel good record of the album. If one doesn’t subconsciously bob their head, or tap their feet to this track, it is safe to assume their musical soul is banal.

Book: Thirteen Reasons Why

Authored by Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why is the riveting tale of Hannah Baker; a high-schooler who commits suicide. In this present society, one only hopes that such an event doesn’t descend on desensitized ears. However, in unparalleled fashion, this novel twists away from the stereotypical suicide-awareness parable.

Thirteen Reasons Why Book Cover

If there were ever a story that epitomized a title, it’s Thirteen Reasons Why. What makes Baker’s occurrence peculiar from others is what she leaves behind. Cassette tapes, in which she chronicles the various events that played integral roles in her decision. Although where the title connects is when she tabs thirteen individuals, unbeknownst to them, as being responsible for her suicide. The tapes are circulated around to each individual, following her death. That’s right — after her suicide — tapes are circulated from the deceased.

Of the guilt-ridden baker’s dozen — pun intended — most important is Clay Jensen. Although the deceased is speaking via the cassettes, it is from Jensen’s perspective in which many of the events are recounted. In just shy of three-hundred pages, the reader trails around with him as he listens to the tapes. The reader shares his turmoil as he tries to grasp the perplexing revelation that he is somewhat to blame for Baker’s suicide.

Thirteen Reasons Why is a sensational read, in which Entertainment Weekly deemed, “suspenseful and addictive.” Jay Asher flawlessly keeps the reader eagerly impatient. This is a must read!

Vogue Recap: May 2013

Celebrating what Vogue deems The Movie Event of the Year, the May issue totes a theme of extravagance and luxury, in honor of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. In theaters May 10, the film is expected to be one of 2013’s biggest.

Carey Mulligan May 2013 US Vogue

Carey Mulligan dazzles the cover in a velvet Oscar de la Renta gown. The cover photo channels Daisy Buchanan — the object of Jay Gatsby’s maniacal fixation — who is portrayed by Mulligan.

In Great Expectations, the cover star details her encyclopedic research of Daisy, and how she unconditionally lost herself in the character. Mulligan even revealed that during filming, herself and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio — who plays Jay Gatsby — would swap in-character notes, in which DiCaprio addressed Mulligan as ‘Darling Daisy’ and signed them as ‘Jay.’ With two of Hollywood’s most scintillating talents at the film’s forefront, one would find it strenuous to object Vogue‘s proclamation.

Lily Collins, Shady Ladies, May 2013 US Vogue

Actress Lily Collins is the May It Girl. Inside, Louis Vuitton artistic director, Marc Jacobs, describes the daughter of music legend Phil Collins as ‘strong, pure, utterly feminine, and beautiful.’ The 24-year old stars in two films slated for release this year: Stuck In Love and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Collins is also featured in the issue’s Shady Ladies spread. The spread features Miranda KerrZoë Saldaña, and actress Elizabeth Debicki.

Continuing with the theme of luxury, British singer Florence Welch gives Vogue a behind-the-walls glance of her new South London quarters. In Rock the Casa, Welch refers to the home as a sanctuary; she cites her mother living only ten minutes away as a primary motive for choosing it.

GQ Recap: May 2013

With May marking the reemergence of SCO, GQ’s selection of Robert Downey, Jr. as their cover boy, is riddled with irony. When it comes to reinventing, no one better symbolizes the modern day standard than Downey. Following a string of flopped films, the 48-year old actor has ascended from Hollywood zero to blockbuster hero.

Robert Downey Jr. GQ May 2013s

Since 2008, Downey has immersed himself in the role of ostentatious billionaire-superhero Tony Stark — better known as Iron Man. With two Iron Man films already under his belt, and Iron Man 3 releasing this weekend,  Downey has arguably become bigger than the franchise itself. In RD3, contributor Chris Heath chronicles his Malibu visit with the man GQ calls The Most Energetic Superhero Alive.

Aside from the cover story, the issue celebrates The Ten Best Whiskey Bars In America; with New York City’s Ward III seemingly topping the list. Baseball standouts such as world-champion San Francisco Giants, Buster Posey and Barry Zito, don trendy baseball themed jackets, in Outta The Park.

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey

Hip-hop talent A$AP Rocky rounds out the issue, modeling this season’s ideal sailor inspired attire.

Signed Sirelle: MAY 2013

There comes a time when one needs a break. For me, that time came shortly after I had published the September 2012 recaps of Vogue and GQ.

Out of character, I began questioning whether or not I was still dedicated to the only thing I had ever been passionate about in life — writing. Granted I was going through an arduous period in my personal life, but I had typically been successful at keeping life’s elements separate; you know, checks and balances.

It was actually some time before September when I first began to experience signs of burnout, although it wasn’t until September that I neared my breaking point. As I had done in the weeks and months prior, I believed I would just push through it. However, I reckon it was Mark Twain who once stated, “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”

I needed a break.

45

A couple months ago I saw an interview in which Michael Jordan detailed his first retirement, to Ahmad Rashad. “His Airness” talked about losing his motivation for the game of basketball, ultimately seeking a new challenge in life. What I have learned is that when one loses motivation or passion for whatever it is that you love, the best thing one can do is step away. Stepping away doesn’t have to be a permanent matter, either, which is why I cited MJ as an example.

In all, I refrained from publishing work for several months; but it wasn’t long after September that the flame had rekindled. I felt that sensation to put pen to pad once more. Rejuvenated, I managed to reacquire the desire to tell a story. Placed in the proper context, writing was no longer a chore.

Never be afraid to take time away from what you love — within reason. Your marriage should not be an applicable option here. Sometimes a break is just the bare necessity for one to regain focus.

In short, folks, I’m back.

Signed,

Sirelle
